Classification of terrible Christmas gifts
1. Nose hair trimmers
a. Nothing says “I don’t like the way you look” more then a cosmetic Christmas gift
2. Fruitcake
a. Ok you expected this, but seriously that stuff isn’t even edible. Just leave it in the fridge and re-gift next year.
3. Celine Dion CD
a. Like the Titanic her career sunk. And seriously who needs that melodramatic whining this time of year
4. Severely oversized clothing
a. Ok really I know I put on a few but XXXL?

That awkward Christmas morning when…
1. Grandma made that stuff again, and I think there might be cat food in it.
2. You leave the name tag on your re-gifted fruitcake
3. You spend Christmas in the ER because your sister is allergic to the tree (true story)
4. You receive one of the “Terrible Christmas gifts” above and have to act happy about it.

Article from News Reporting

The School of Computing is currently in the process of moving and expanding the server room from the third floor of Hickman Science Center to the first.
“You buy an elephant but without the proper pen something is bound to go wrong.” Said Professor John Beckett from the School of Computing, “The University has a fair amount invested in these servers.”
This last summer the School of Computing had a server die because of the heat level in the server room. Temperatures in the room were measured up to 110ºF. “We have no idea how hot it was inside the server, probably considerably higher and probably something melted.” Said Beckett.
“We need more server capability in our department because the IT industry is moving in that direction. Said Beckett. Servers make heat, the office where our servers have been living does not have enough capability or physical room to handle heat, and we need an expansion.”
The current server room is an office on the third floor of Hickman, and besides the need for expansion and renovation, the office is needed for a faculty member. “The server room was in a faculty office and the office is needed now.” Said Marty Hamilton Vice President of Development. “It just made sense to relocate for both the faculty and students in the School of Computing. The expected completion is Mid-November”
Beckett says that the projects mantra is to do it right, not right now. “Plant services is really doing a nice job, and we want it to be a first class facility.” Said Beckett.
The new server room is more then double the size of the previous, it will have hardwood floors (the carpet was causing static electricity disruption), an air conditioning unit made specifically for server rooms, that circulates air in an energy efficient way, five new server racks, and has room for expansion.
“We’ve carved out the end of lab and made room for racks for servers, and we can probably quadruple or quintuple our server capacity without running out of space. Said Beckett. We’re planning some years in the future; I think this room should easily be able to handle us for ten years. I’d like to have ten years of focusing on what we do instead of ‘its too hot in here.’”
Jasmine Atkins a Junior Computer Science Major says she is excited about the new server room because of the better access and faster and more efficient servers, but the renovation process has been affecting her day to day. “I work in the lab so it’s hard to help students because you have to yell over all of the work and it smells like paint and give me headaches.” Said Atkins. “In the long run it’ll be better for the computer department and it’ll kind of be our thing to show off”
“It has taken several years to get the administration’s attention on it, they’ve finally gotten it up so it looks like a minor project.” Said Beckett. “It’s actually getting done, we’re going to get it done.”

Christmas

I am so happy its almost christmas! I have been listening to christmas tunes since october. Here is one of my favorites:

Yeah its a little cheesy but it just brings back some great memories!

By now in New York City.
There’s snow on the ground.
And out in California.
The sunshines’ falling down.
And maybe down in Memphis, Graceland’s all in lights.
And in Atlanta, Georgia, there’s peace on earth tonight.

Christmas in Dixie, its snowing in the pines.
Merry Christmas from Dixie to everyone tonight.

Its windy in Chicago.
The kids are out of school.
There’s magic in Motown.
The city’s on the move.
In Jackson, Mississippi to Charlotte, Caroline.
And all across the Nation, its a peaceful Christmas time.

Christmas in Dixie, its snowing in the pines.
Merry Christmas from Dixie, to everyone tonight.
And from Fort Payne, Alabama..Merry Christmas tonight.

Top 10 Things I can think of off the top of my head:

1. Arrested Development -

I loved that show. I am sad its gone and don’t think I can wait a whole year for the mini series/movie.

2. Kansas City Chiefs Football-

Football is such an easy sport to be a fan of unless you are a fan of the chiefs, but I wouldn’t trade it .

3. Taco Bell-

Delicious and affordable? Preposterous

4. Good Design is good -

Seeing bad design hurts me physically and sadly I have been guilty of producing bad design. I am constantly trying to improve though.

5. iPhone 3GS

You have treated me well my friend, and I will never betray you for Siri as long as you live.

SO Comfy.

Floor Hockey 2011

This year I was pressured into signing up for floor hockey intramurals. I had never before played this game, and was a bit nervous that I wouldn’t be able to keep up.

Being a true “Amurican” I hadn’t really been a fan of the game. I had attended my share of games, and seen a couple highlights here and there but it never really caught my attention. So I signed up, bought my stick and began to play.

I was pleasantly surprised at how fast I actually caught on to the skills needed. Obviously with real hockey the hardest part is the fact you are on ice, without that variable however the game is pretty simple and fun.

So far this season I have scored two goals and had numerous assists. Now our team the Zebracorns have won our first playoff game and are playing our second tonight against on of the best teams in the league so it should be fun!

Music Reviews: Mylo Xyloto, Christmas Jams, and the like…

Yesterday I spend some of my hard earned money on two albums that I have been impatiently waiting for. Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto and She & Him’s a Very She & Him Christmas. Here is a quick review of them both.

First off Coldplay has been a favorite band of mine since X&Y came out years ago. I know some may say that was the album Coldplay sold their soul on, but to be honest it was my favorite and I have only seen growth and improvement since. I really enjoy seeing an artist discover a new sound in one album and then develop and build upon that idea on the subsequent records. I can see that progression in Coldplay’s last two albums and with Mylo Xyloto is no different.

I want to be upfront about a few things I didn’t like about the album. First of all I really hate the title, I mean c’mon Viva La Vida was at least a familiar phrase and easy to pronounce, but I still keep calling this “Mylo Extol” which is incorrect. I honestly think the very vocal group of people that hate Coldplay do so because of things like this ridiculous title. Another thing is I really don’t like the album artwork, I have never been a fan of the whole “street art” look.

The music itself is pretty typical-last-three-album’s Coldplay, very big sounds, lots of instrumentation, gang vocal sing alongs, and emotional journeys. A few highlights for me are the first two tracks of the album. I saw Coldplay at Music Midtown a month ago and they opened up the show with those two tracks and it was an out of body, life changing experience. The rest of the album is also very good and enjoyable. Definitely give it a listen.

The next album is A Very She & Him Christmas. And because of the length of this post I will just quickly summarize in 5 words. Great Christmas album, instant classic.

The end.
